The Waters of Discipleship

The sun seems to burn hotter in Salinas Grande. Scraggly trees provide little shade, the rocky ground radiates heat up through your shoes, and the water only turns on for three days a week.

Friday isn't one of the water days. But that doesn’t stop Discipleship programming.

Our staff and the volunteer leaders meet up every Friday at a concrete basketball court in the middle of the community. The Salinas kids - those officially enrolled in the program, and others tagging along for the fun come for either a morning or afternoon session, depending on their school schedules.

Some of the kids travel up to ten kilometers (almost seven miles) round trip on the dirt road, and everyone participates in the fast paced soccer games that take place before lessons. Ultimately, over 70 people will be out there beneath the blazing sun - the students for two to four hours and the volunteer leaders and SuNica staff for around eight.

Our team brings water, but it's never enough to satisfy everyone's thirst and people in the community are reluctant to share their water stores as they have their own families to consider. Week after week, everyone makes their journey home thirsty.

And yet, the discipleship program is thriving in Salinas Grande!

Despite this incredible obstacle - attendance rates remain incredibly high. Since the program began almost three years ago, we’ve had 12 kids stick with their studies and graduate high school after no one could remember any graduates for years. We can’t take all of the credit for that, but IT’S STILL AMAZING! And many of the kids have a heart to serve others and so they come for a second day of sessions every week which is part of our Volunteer Leader Training. In each community we have staff, then volunteer leaders, and then PRE-LEADERS beneath them. It's so important to keep the leadership pipeline stoked as deeply as we can muster!

And all of that fruit is being born without an adequate supply of our most basic human need.

Now just imagine what'll happen when we all come together to Turn On The Water in Salinas Grande? Join us in making this a reality at TurnOnTheWater.org !

"But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." - John 4:14
